Diaphragms

Diaphragms are flexible barriers that are commonly used to provide a seal and to isolate an enclosure between a moving and stationary part. One example of an application where a diaphragm is used is with a piston working within a cylinder.

Static Diaphragms separate two fluids with little motion or pressure. Dynamic Diaphragms form a seal between stationary and moving parts, and trasmit pressure.

Common Uses:

Diaphragms are used in many different applications, including:

  • Regulators
  • Shock absorbers
  • Pumps
  • Air compressors
  • Pressure sensors

Techno Ad – Explore The Possibilities

Techno Ad uses special tooling to develop diaphragms according to customer specifications from whatever elastomer that is required for drinking water, food, medical, and other markets. We support the development process from concept to prototype and mass production.

Techno Ad’s diaphragms meet the highest of military specifications, FDA, NSF61, and other standards.

Small minimum order quantities (MOQ) can be processed for in-stock customer designed diaphragms. Techno Ad uses an advanced stock management system for all customer designed products.

Frequently Asked Questions – Diaphragms

What is a diaphragm in sealing applications?
A diaphragm is a flexible membrane that acts as a dynamic seal between two or more components, allowing pressure or motion to transfer without fluid leakage or contamination. Diaphragms are essential in systems where precision, isolation, or hygienic separation is required.
What materials are your diaphragms made from?
We manufacture diaphragms using a broad range of elastomers and thermoplastics—EPDM, NBR, FKM (Viton®), Silicone, PTFE, FFKM, and specialty blends. Material selection is application-driven, considering media exposure, pressure cycles, temperature range, and regulatory demands.
What industries do your diaphragms serve?
Our diaphragms are designed for high-performance applications in waterworks, irrigation, medical and life sciences, aerospace and defense, chemical processing, oil and gas, semiconductor, and food and beverage. We build for environments where failure isn’t an option.
When should I use a diaphragm over other sealing solutions?
Use a diaphragm when your system requires repeated actuation, precise pressure control, or isolation between media—especially gases and liquids. They are ideal in valves, pumps, regulators, and metering devices where dynamic, leak-proof movement is essential.
Can you customize diaphragms for my specific application?
Yes. We specialize in custom diaphragms tailored to your exact geometry, load profile, and performance criteria. Whether you need a multi-layer construction, embedded fabric reinforcement, or complex contours—we design and manufacture to spec.
What types of diaphragm constructions do you offer?
We produce molded diaphragms, laminated/fabric-reinforced diaphragms. Construction depends on the balance between flexibility, durability, media compatibility, and mechanical support your system requires.
What’s the typical lifespan or cycle count of your diaphragms?
Lifespan is highly dependent on application parameters—pressure, frequency, temperature, media, and diaphragm design. We engineer diaphragms that routinely exceed millions of cycles in demanding environments, and we’re happy to simulate and validate longevity for your conditions. How ever, lifespan must be tested by customer and might be shorter in a very aggressive environments.
Are your diaphragms compliant with regulatory standards?
Yes. We manufacture to meet applicable standards including FDA, USP Class VI, NSF, WRAS, MIL-SPEC, and others, depending on the target industry. Full material traceability and certification are available upon request.
Can diaphragms handle aggressive chemicals or extreme temperatures?
Absolutely. We select materials and designs based on your chemical compatibility and thermal demands. From peroxide-cured EPDM for chlorinated systems to PTFE blends for corrosive media or high-temperature FKM for extreme environments—we engineer to perform under pressure.
Do you offer assistance with diaphragm design and material selection?
That’s where we excel. Our technical team works hand-in-hand with yours to recommend optimal geometry, thickness, reinforcement, and materials to ensure both manufacturability and superior performance. We’re solution engineers, not just suppliers.
Can you support rapid prototyping or low-volume production?
Yes. Whether you’re developing a new system or iterating on an existing one, we provide fast-turn prototyping and small-batch runs without compromising on quality. We’re structured to support both R&D and full-scale production.
What are your lead times and MOQs?
Lead times depend on design complexity and material selection. Standard constructions can ship within days, while custom or certified options may take longer. We work to your schedule and provide clear lead times and minimums up front—no guesswork.
How do I start the process of ordering a custom diaphragm?
Send us your drawings, performance specs, or even just a challenge you’re facing. We’ll review your needs and guide you through design, material selection, prototyping, and validation. Our process is transparent, collaborative, and driven by performance.
